Spotycast Free: restore Spotify Connect playback through Icecast
Your Linux streamer still plays music, but its built-in Spotify Connect no longer works? Spotycast Free moves Spotify-controlled playback to a separate Debian/Linux bridge and publishes a stable Icecast HTTP radio stream for compatible players. Keep the working audio hardware and replace only the obsolete Spotify-facing integration.
One Debian bridge, one stable radio URL
Classic / Free is the compatibility-first Spotycast edition. You select the Spotycast endpoint in Spotify; the separate Linux host publishes the audio as a conventional HTTP stream. Your original streamer only needs to accept the selected radio format.

Standard lossy audio
Compressed Spotify source up to approximately 320 kbps where supported. Re-encoding to a lossless container does not recover discarded source information.
No Premium installation key

Which audio players can use the Free Icecast stream?
A compatible radio or HTTP-stream input is the main requirement. Player brands alone do not guarantee that every hardware model or firmware version supports the configured mountpoint and codec.
Roon Live Radio
Use the configured Icecast HTTP URL as a radio source in Roon when the stream format is supported.
LMS / Lyrion
Use an HTTP-compatible radio source with the appropriate LMS or Squeezebox-style receiving player.
Volumio / moOde
Open a compatible network radio stream rather than relying on obsolete embedded Spotify software.
Legacy network streamers
Keep a functioning DAC or player that accepts the actual HTTP audio format. Some older streamers may need a different configured codec.

How to install and test Spotycast Free on Debian
Use the complete installation guide for the reference Docker image, host network requirements and Portainer/Compose setup. After deployment, the Classic installer is available at /root/binaries in the documented container.
- Deploy on your trusted Debian/Linux host or VMFollow the documented container procedure. Keep administrative services on a private LAN and avoid exposing the desktop, SSH or radio endpoint unintentionally to the public internet.
- Run the Free installer inside the containerFrom the container’s terminal, execute
cd /root/binariesand then./spotifyd-free. Follow the installer prompts. - Check Spotify Connect discoveryOpen Spotify and select the Spotycast/spotifyd endpoint. If it does not appear, diagnose discovery and network issues before changing the audio route.
- Verify the actual Icecast HTTP streamCheck the mountpoint configured by the installer, then open the URL in VLC, ffplay or your target radio player. Audible end-to-end playback, not just an endpoint listing, is the success condition.
Limitations and realistic expectations
- Spotify source quality: the Classic spotifyd input is compressed; publishing that source in another format does not create true lossless audio.
- Buffering and latency: Icecast radio playback typically adds buffering and does not behave identically to a direct Spotify Connect renderer.
- Player compatibility: the receiving device must support the configured HTTP stream’s codec and transport.
- Network and service availability: the Spotify-facing bridge, local audio route, Liquidsoap and Icecast all need to work; a stable URL does not eliminate possible upstream service problems.
- Host prerequisites: use a compatible Debian/Linux host or VM with adequate resources and reliable network access. Keep the deployment on a trusted network.
